Guantanamo Bay detainees in Camp 4 praying morning/Fajr prayer.

Camp 4 is the only camp in the whole base in which “highly compliant” detainees are allowed to live communally, in ten-man bays. It is the only camp which journalists are allowed to photograph. Photographs of Guantanamo Bay hence always portray men in clean white shirts and white or brown pants, lazing around, walking freely, praying together, and playing sport.

However, Murat Kurnaz, a former Guantanamo Bay detainee, recently commented on Camp 4:

… “I call (it) Camp Hollywood because it was made for journalists. When the journalist people are coming, they (the detainees) can play football, maybe the first time in five years. They (the guards) say that this is the same thing every day – they (the detainees) can play football, volleyball. And there is place for football and volleyball and basketball and when the journalists are filming they (the detainees) can (only) play that.”
