It’s really important to me that I disappear for a while. Go to a place where no one knows my name and more importantly I won’t tell anyone my name, I’ll tell them a name, of course, but not mine. They can’t have it. I’ll be different every day, to every person I meet. When they get too close, I’ll run. I’ll become someone new, somewhere new. No one will know where I am. They’ll talk about how they always knew this would happen. Mom always said I’d run, and she was right. She was right about a lot of things. I have her heart. I can tell, because I can see it in her eyes when she talks about Dad. Her heart has been broken since the day she met him and I can’t live that life, neither could he. She always knew I would run because he did. My sisters stayed. My sisters will stay. My sisters build, they build their lives with their feet in place. I’m too restless to add to this city’s skyline. My mom’s heart and my dad’s soul. My grandpa’s mind and my grandma’s hands. I’m patchwork. I come undone. My scars will show you that. The stories my scars hold will change, just like my name. That way I’ll never think of them, close my eyes and see my dad lying in the street. They’ll be from that time I reached the highest branch and fell straight out of that tree. They’ll be from me climbing, breathing, running, moving… they won’t be from me coming undone ever again. I’ll shave my head. I’ll never cut my hair again. I’ll never fall in love.
